President Uribe was asked whether he thought U.S. elected officials provided some of it. He sputtered and insinuated. See Uribe in His Own Words and The Autumn of Uribe, II.

El Tiempo — which was not invited to the (somewhat bizarre) impromptu, nationally televised press conference, prompting protests by colleagues — follows up on that angle, through its Washington correspondent.

Both opposition and government have strolled the hallways of Congress since January, and El Tiempo has seen the plane tickets. Good, solid reporting.

Desde enero, cuando los demócratas asumieron control del Congreso de ese país, Washington se convirtió en destino obligado para dirigentes del Polo, representantes de centrales obreras, Ong y otros.

Since January, when the Democrats took control of the U.S. Congress, Washington has become an obligatory destination for leaders of the Alternative Democratic Pole, labor representatives, NGOs and others.

Su misión: torpedear el TLC, pedir un cambio de dirección en el Plan Colombia y ventilar su versión sobre los nexos entre políticos y grupos paramilitares.

Their mission: Torpedo the free trade agreement, ask for a change in direction for Plan Colombia and air their version of the nexus between politicians and paramilitary groups.

El senador Gustavo Petro fue el primero en prender motores el pasado 5 de marzo invitado por el sindicato de trabajadores del Acero (United Steelworkers), quienes le ayudaron a cuadrar la agenda junto a otras ONG en Derechos Humanos.

Sen. Gustavo Petro was the first to catch a plane last March 5 at the invitation of the United Steelworkers union, who helped him frame his agenda togethe with other NGOs in the human rights area.

Petro se reunió con más de diez legisladores y (o) sus asesores. Entre ellos, Sander Levin, presidente del subcomité de Comercio de la Cámara y el más firme opositor al TLC con Colombia.

Petro met with more than 10 legislators and (or) their aides, among them Sander Levin, president of the Commerce subcommittee and the staunchest opponent of a free trade agreement with Colombia.

Así mismo, con Mike Sheehy, asistente legal de la presidente del Congreso, Nancy Pelosi, los representantes Tommy Baldwin, Donald Payne, Mike Michaud, y Paul Oostburg, del Comité de Servicios Armados. También con el staff del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado, y el senador Russ Feingold.

He also met with Mike Sheehy, legal aide to Speaker Pelosi, as well as representatives Tommy Baldwin, Donald Payne, Mike Michaud, and Paul Oostburg, from the Armed Services committee. He also met with the staff of Senate Foreign Relations and Senator Russ Feingold.

Petro, además, dio entrevista a diarios y dictó tres conferencias: en el Foreign Press Center, en la Universidad de George Washington y en el Diálogo Interamericano.

Petro also gave interviews to the newspapers and gave three conferences: at the Foreign Press Center, at George Washington University and at Interamerican Dialogue.

Y su mensaje siempre fue el mismo: el TLC solo beneficiará a los ‘paras’ porque son los grandes terratenientes, falta de garantías para la oposición y señalamientos contra el entorno de Uribe que ha sido salpicado por los nexos ‘paras’.

His message was always the same: the FTA would only benefit the “paras” because they are the large landholders, lack of guarantees to the opposition and signs that Uribe’s supporters were riddled with “para” ties.

En paralelo con la visita del senador llegaron también representantes de otros sectores muy críticos del Gobierno. Entre ellos, Carlos Rodríguez, de la Comisión Colombiana de Juristas, que participó en un foro en el Congreso organizado por el representante Jim McGovern.

In parallel with Petro’s visit other sectors highly critical of the government sent representatives, among them Carlos Rodríguez, from the Colombian Commission of Judges, which participated in a forum in the Congress organized by Rep. Jim McGovern.

Luego, entre el 26 y 29 de marzo, llegó una comitiva más grande encabezada por los senadores Jorge Enrique Robledo, Alexandra Moreno Piraquive e Iván Moreno Rojas. Junto a ellos, voceros de la CUT y la CTC.

Later, between March 26 and March 29, a larger contingent arrived, headed by Sen. Robledo, Sen. Moreno Piraquive and Sen. Moreno Rojas, along with spokespersons for CUT and the CTC (two labor federations).

Su viaje fue coordinado por el AFL-CIO, uno de los sindicatos más grandes del país y también opositor del TLC con Colombia. El formato fue más o menos el mismo. Reuniones con los representantes Bill Pascrell, Hilda Solís, otras con funcionarios del Departamento de Estado y con grupos sindicales de E.U.

The trip was coordinated by the AFL-CIO, one of the largest unions in the country and an opponent of the FTA. The format was more or less the same: Meetings with Reps. Pascreel and Solís, other State Dept. officials and U.S. labor groups.

La semana pasada estuvo en la ciudad Rafael Pardo, que, aunque no es del Polo, se alejó del uribismo a raíz de tema paramilitar.

Last week, Rafael Pardo, who, although not part of the Pole, broke with Uribe over paramilitarism, was also in the city.

El Polo y demás grupos opositores, por supuesto, han utilizado la infraestructura y acceso de las ONG y grupos sindicales en E.U. para hacer sentir sus voces.

The Pole and other opposition groups, of course, have used the infrastructure of NGOs and labor unions in the U.S. to make their voices heard.

El Gobierno también

The government, too.

Pero el Gobierno tampoco se ha quedado atrás a la hora de dar explicaciones y defender el TLC.

The government has not lost any time in offering explanations and defending the FTA.

En el mismo período -es decir, desde que los demócratas llegaron al poder- el vicepresidente Francisco Santos ha visitado la ciudad en dos ocasiones. Igual lo han hecho cuatro ministros: Luis Guillermo Plata, de Comercio; Juan Manuel Santos, de Defensa; Fernando Araujo, Canciller; y Oscar Iván Zuluaga, Hacienda. Y la semana que viene llega el propio Uribe junto al fiscal Mario Iguarán y varios ministros para una gira de 3 días.

During the same period — that is, since the Democrats came to power — Vice President Santos has visited Washington twice, as have four ministers: Plato, of Commerce; Santos of Defense; Araujo, the foreign minister; and Zuluaga of the Treasury. And this week Uribe himself will come, with [prosecutor] Mario Iguarán and various ministers, for a three-day tour.

Por su parte, la embajadora Carolina Barco y su grupo de asesores llevan más de 100 congresistas visitados desde que comenzó el año.
