“Behind the Scenes of Tropa de Elite!”

Watching Rede Globo’s Fantástico (Brazil) — Second Life is not just a game, it’s an actual alternative universe! — questioning the verisimilitude of infotainment is like seeing Timothy Leary or Baba Ram Dass invited to chair the ethics committee of the American Psychological Association. Subtitled screenpot of the segment TK.

Production of the film was marred by a case for the police: 90 weapons used in the filming were stolen. “The guys were kidnapped. Four persons and our driver, with the stage weapons inside, kidnapped. Both stage weapons and real ones. That’s right,” Padilha recalls. The van was found an hour later. The weapons were not.

‘Fantástico’ revela os bastidores do filme ‘Tropa de elite’: Globo’s Fantástico reveals the behind-the-scenes story of Tropa de elite!

When Fantástico “looks behind the scenes,” this generally means that they dub their own voiceover over someone else’s video press release. See, for example,

Still, the airing in full of the “extras” footage from the forthcoming DVD  — and the weird turnabout in editorial orientation represented by Globo’s attempt to “reality-test the press release” here — is interesting in itself. I translate.

The film has generated a lot of debate. BOPE is shown as a violent, but incorruptible, force. “In my system of values, torture is worse than corruption. I do not think the film strengthens the image of the elite unit that is shown there,” says director José Padilha.

“People expect a police force that is more violent, more aggresssive, a punitive police force,” said former BOPE captain and co-screenwriter of the film, Rodrigo Pimentel. “Those who applaud BOPE are not those people who are subject to repression in poor communities,” says the president of the Association of Military Police Troopers and Firemen of Rio de Janeiro, Vanderlei Ribeiro.

Praças are privates, the rank and file trooper. Firemen and police belong to the same military hierarchy, and firemen are often found working alongside police in Rio militias, according to local reporting on the phenomenon.

Co-screenwriter Pimentel is also the model for Capt. Nascimento, the film’s hero.

“There are reports from people who have this to say: ‘In my community, kids who play cops and robbers in the street, who once modeled themselves after the trafficker, now want to be BOPE,” says the state commandant of the military police, Ubiratan Ângelo.

Ângelo has also said that community protests against ultraviolence and excessive force by police who charge in rocking and rolling their heavy weaponry indiscriminately in all cardinal points of the compass, from zenith to azimuth — I can show you news footage of police doing just exactly that, in Catumbi — are all just “disseminating gabbling agitprop on behalf of the Traffic.”

Recall that

PM commandant Ubiratan Ângelo was met with gunfire when he arrived in the Vila Cruzeiro, in the Rio suburb of Penha, for a meeting around 8 a.m. on Monday, June 11.

He later told the press that he was not targeted by gunfire upon arrival — and upon departing as well.

He was filmed being shot at.

But it never happened.

You didn’t see nuthin’, you got me?

But the mainline police battalions are depicted as a corrupt and discredited force. “What I can guarantee you is that when the force learns about such things, it acts. It acts, arrests, punishes and throws wrongdoers out,” Ângelo swears.

“The greates pride of a BOPE trooper is that of belonging to a unit. This is very effective against corruption, very,” adds Pimentel.

“BOPE is no different than any other battalion, or precinct, in various operational areas,” responds Ribeiro of the troopers’ union.

The middle class appears in the film as the principal customer of the drug traffic. “The middle class corrupts, and then criticizes corruption,” says Ribeiro. “Every drug user knows full well where the drugs he is buying come from. Many of the people who march against violence are drug consumers,” says the film’s director, Padilha.

Boycott Bolivian marching powder!

Put up a petition proposing that and I will sign up in a New York minute. Seriously.

The Fantástico segment in question

I went to college, way back when, for example, with the privileged spawn of a senior Bush II official whose name you know very well — but a gentleman and a scholar can say no more.

This (male or female personage) could snuffle up the entire annual (DDT-laced) production of an Andean cocalero in the time it took to listen to the entirety of Pink Floyd’s The Wall — or a Jerry Garcia guitar solo, whichever put the listener out of their misery first — while hot-tubbing it.

Memories of that grotesque scene gave me a permanent aversion to the shit.

And Jerry “Busted smoking crack in his BMW in Golden Gate Park” Garcia, too, for that matter.

“Head all empty and I don’t care”

Too goddamn right.

I can even do without marijuana. (Not that I have ever been much of a pothead, mind you. The stuff gives me the cold sweats and a pointless case of the gibbering noia. Will take piss-test to prove it.)

The actors also did not have an easy time of it. They did heavy-duty training with former BOPE officers. “We wanted BOPE troopers to watch the film and wonder, Is that an actor or a trooper? I think we pulled it off. …

Filming was exhaustive. Wagner Moura was pushed to the limit by his instructor.

E a pressão persistiu, persistiu.

American instructors also helped train the actors. …

Really? And what were their names?

Fantástico holds open mike night for the BOPE mythos of hyperefficient death-dealing.
