In the evening, the TV program La ventana indiscreta and Espinoza showed a home-made video in which Diana Arévalo tells what allegedly happened on September 19. She swears that Toledo tried to rape her, that Adam Pollack was present at his office, and that, when she told his to the police at Orrantia, she was arrested and even socked on the nose.

Perú Posible prepara dos denuncias contra legislador Gustavo Espinoza: La República (Lima, Peru) follows up on a Peruvian lawmaker’s charge that former President Toledo raped a young woman at a drug-fueled orgy in September of this year.

It would be interesting to see who else in the Peruvian press — and gabbling blogosphere — is giving credence to the charge. The problem is that this would involve delving deeply into the murky and deeply, deeply repugnant world of the Peruvian tabloid press. Which is not a happy way to spend your day, I find.

The leadership of the Possible Peru coalition has taken decisions today toward defining a legal strategy for responding to Congresssman Gustavo Espinoza of the GPD, who charged former president Toledo with raping a 22 year-old woman.

LR reported that it visited the address the woman gave on the police report — which she refused to sign.

It appeared, they reported, to be, ahem, a booming den of hookerdom.

On Wednesday evening, at their headquarters on Pershing Avenue, party leaders agreed to bring two lawsuits against Espinoza: one for defamation, to be filed by Toledo attorney Tuedela Chopitea, a former Minister of Justice; and another before the ethics committee, chaired by congressmember David Waisman.

Toledo’s party originally thought of charging Espinoza on constitutional grounds, but decided against it in order not to slow proceedings in the other two cases.

Our sources say Toledo asked the party to act quickly in replying legally to Espinoza.

At this moment, the main problem for the PP in filing the cases is gathering all the statements that have been made about the supposed rape.

Toledo’s defense strategy is the obvious one. Espinoza had no basis for affirming that the supposed rape occurred during an “orgy of alcohol and drugs.” He must now present evidence to support the charge.

In the meantime, GPD lawmaker has demonstrated a certain kamikaze spirit. In statements to a local radio station he said that “it does not matter to [me] that they might kick [me] out of Congress” if it is confirmed that the charge against Toledo is false.

But Espinoza is not the only one who has lost confidence in the charge. His party has also turned their backs on him. GPD leader Torres Caro yesterday said that the charge “has no coherence.”

Apra responde y se reitera denuncia

APRA responds and the charge is repeated

The APRA leadership did not like hearing Toledo blaming President Garcia for the charge Espinoza laid against him. In response, APRA congressmember Cabanillas [the speaker of the house, I believe] said that the President had “neither part nor art” in the charge. Cabanillas also criticized PP for having charged opposition parties, “in a facile manner” and “with a long tongue,” for playing a role in the affair.

For his part, first vice-president Giampietri called on Toledo to answer the charge without blaming Garcia.

In the evening, the TV program La ventana indiscreta [“window left open, indiscreetly”] and Espinoza showed a home-made video in which Diana Arévalo tells what allegedly happened on September 19. She swears that Toledo tried to rape her, that Adam Pollack was present at his office, and that, when she told his to the police at Orrantia, she was arrested and even socked on the nose.

I will try to see if I can find that on YouTube.

I was just picking up again in my long interrupted reading of Mario Vargas Llosa’s Conversation in the Cathedral, about the early years of APRA.

General conclusion, for what it’s worth: It really, really sucks to be Peruvian.

And has for a long, long time.
