Brazil: Life Imitates “Tropa de Elite”

From RONDONIAOVIVO.COM | Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brasil: Cops allegedly sing songs from the soundtrack of the hit movie Tropa de Elite — see We Actually Watch Elite de Tropa — while beating the snot out of two suspects.

Porto Velho is the capital of Rondônia, population 1.6 million, which borders Bolivia [harsh game-show buzzer] Venezuela.

G1/Globo and other had agencies reported last week that police moving in to quell a prison riot in the Northeast got themselves pumped up by listening to the same soundtrack.

File under “Life imitates art” and “infotainment cross-promotion.” It is doubtful that a fairly routine incident like this would have gotten much ink were it not for the entertainment angle.

The film’s socially redeeming qualities, or lack thereof, have been the subject of fairly intense moral panic:

According to the victims, who asked to remain anonymous, in the early morning hours of Saturday, the police invaded the house of one of them and busted everything up. “We were at a party and when we saw them they were in the street looking for some bandit that we knew nothing about. I tried to go close the gate and when they saw me they jumped me, crashing through gate and invading the house. I asked if they had a warrant and then they got furious,” one of the victims says.

The victim said the military police troopers brutally beat everyone at the party, as well as entering and breaking the fan and TV inside the the residence. The police also allegedly slashed the tires of bicycles belonging to the victims.

“They hit me in the face with a pistol and were so violent they did not even seem like police. They asked about names we did not recognize, and tattoos, and the whole time they were singing songs from that movie Tropa de Elite. Afterwards they threatened to kill us if we reported the beating,” the victim alleged.

I hope nothing happens to them because they did.

Today, the troopers involved will be summoned to PM internal affairs. Col. Gonçalves of the Capital Police Command said the charges will be heard and that the case will be referred to internal affairs, which will open a formal inquiry in the events. “We do not agree with this type of procedure. If proven, those involved will be punished,” he concluded.
