Vereador Nadinho é solto e vai direto para a Câmara: City legislator “Nadinho” is set free and goes straight to the Legislature. O Globo reports.
After 24 days in jail, city legislator Josinaldo Francisco “Nadino de Rio das Pedras” da Cruz (DEM), was released today. He is accused of ordering the murder of police inspector Félix Tostes, allegedly one of the leaders of the milicia of Rio das Pedras. Leaving the lockup at the 73rd Police District in São Gonçalo around 3 pm, Nadinho was met by his wife and son. From there he went straight to the chambers of the municipal legislature, where he signed himself in. He intended to take part in the vote on the city budget for the coming year, but the session was postponed.
“Let me go, I have a ton of papers to sign,” said Nadinho on arrival, preferring not to comment on the judicial ruling.
Nadinho had his detention decreed by Judge Rosa of the 4th Criminal Bar and was jailed on November 26, on the petition of the Public Ministry, which feared attempts to coerce witnesses to the crime. On Wednesday, Judge Guimarães of the same court, revoked the order, because the witnesses have now all given statements. Inspector Raphael Moreira Dias, charged in the same case, was also released. According to Nadinho’s lawyer, Yuri Sahione, the case is now stalled because the court is in recess.
Tostes was executed by three men who fired more than 40 times at his car in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. The inspector, police say, was disposed to run for the City Counil to challenge Nadinho’s power in the area.
He was also a fugitive at the time, on suspicion of (1) involvement in the gambling mafia, (2) running the local protection racket and all of its illegal businesses in that area. The emblem of the Peacemakers — standard death’s-head imagery — was openly displayed at his memorial service.
He was a close adviser to the previous chief of the state judicial police, who decorated him for meritorious service.
“The battle flag of Rio das Pedras, Rio de Janeiro” at the wake for Inspector Tostes: The Peacemakers (‘pacificadores’) were headed by a senior police inspector who was promoted and decorated by an indicted former police chief whose campaign for the state assembly was allegedly funded by the gambling mobs involved in Operation Hurricane, in which senior judges are charged with selling verdicts that provided legal cover to gambling mafias. The inspector, a fugitive from justice for both areas of criminal activity, was later found with 30 bullets in him, sitting in his Toyota pickup truck outside his girlfriend’s apartment. His paramilitary group ran bingo halls and GatoNet (an illegal cable TV network) and is under investigation for money-laundering. A political rival — whose campaign literature featured the symbol of an area militia (Batman), has now been charged with ordering his assassination and
is was in protective custody. Policemen and former policemen have been charged with carrying out the assassination.
