“The Army of God Masses at the Rio Bravo”

What rough beast slouches toward Ciudad Juárez, etc.

Frank Bussey, director of Military Ministry at Fort Jackson, has been telling soldiers at Fort Jackson that “government authorities, police and the military = God’s Ministers.” Bussey’s teachings from the “God’s Basic Training” Bible study guide he authored says US troops have “two primary responsibilities”: “to praise those who do right” and “to punish those who do evil — “God’s servant, an angel of wrath.” … Military Ministry says its staffers are responsible for “working with Chaplains and Military personnel to bring lost soldiers closer to Christ, build them in their faith and send them out into the world as Government-paid missionaries” — which appears to be a clear-cut violation of federal law governing the separation of church and state.–Military Evangelism Deeper, Wider Than First Thought (December 21, 2007)

“We must pursue our particular means for transforming the nation — through the military. And the military may well be the most influential way to affect that spiritual superstructure. Militaries exercise, generally speaking, the most intensive and purposeful indoctrination program of citizens …” –Gen. (Ret.) Bob Dees, Campus Ministry

Indoctrinating the men with the keys to the warehouses full of big freaking guns to rise up and purify the nation in the name of all that is apocalyptic can have serious drawbacks, with long-term, potentially catastrophic, consequences.

Does the phrase “Purity of Essence” ring a bell?

It is a bit like appointing someone who believes in the imminent Rapture to head your risk-management decision. The man is entitled to his beliefs, but they are not aligned well with a fundamental premise of the risk-management profession: That tomorrow is another day.

The activities of Christian Embassy in the United States Dept. of Defense caused, if not a great public outcry, then at least an internal ethics investigation at Defense, which sanctioned senior military officers for creating the appearance of an official endorsement of religious doctrine.

Los prostitutos célebres: Proceso (Mexico) dedicates its cover this week to a similar process it says is underway in Mexico’s armed forces.

The teaser:

With the arrival of PAN in the presidency, the Mexican Army has set aside its secular tradition and now subordinates its symbols and emblems to the imagery and allegoriesof the Catholic Church.

According to a report in Proceso No. 1625, on newsstands December 23, the Catholic Church is acting contrary to its own statues and forgetting the role it played in the Cristera War.

The Army even permits the display, in the church attended by its soldiers, of a sixth star — denoting “the general of generals,” Jesus Christ — over the fifth, which represents the President as commander in chief of the Armed Forces.

If El Presidente is not right with God, will the patriotic forces take orders from George Bush’s “higher father” and purify the nation?

Evidence of these practices is found in the Secretary of Defense and in Military Encampment No. 1, according to the report.

These instituational insertions of the Archdiocese into the military organization were announced in the federal Official Diary in February 2006, as the election campaigns began, Proceso reports.

The angelic paratrooper as Gabriel of the Church Militant: “From heaven, on a mission.” The Mexican military reprises The Blues Brothers Movie (“We’re on a mission from God”) as apocalyptic doctrine.

In its “Analysis” section, Proceso editorializes with great fury on the subject:

Norberto Rivera Carrera is desperate. Archbishop and primate of Mexico, prince of the Church in our country, he has lashed out, through the media at the “prostitutes” which have become [the chosen target of his invective.]

The subject of front-page headlines all year over the Church’s pedophilia scandals, Rivera Carrera has angrily assailed not only freedom of expression but also another fundamental principle of democracy: The transparency of public institutions, both formal and informal.

With Rivera leading the way, the Catholic Church is trying to recover a presence in the public sphere that it lost between the 19th and the 20th centuries.

Since the Mexican right came to power in 2000, the Catholic church has been trying to reverse this historical trend and advance its plans to interfere in public life, trying to penetrate the secular state.

It has enlisted the Mexican Army to the cause of a greater role for the church in Mexico’s educational system — the same army it faced in the Cristera Wars of the early 20th century.

It was a war sparked by the Church’s refusal to obey or recognize the Constitution of 1917, which formalized the legal framework laid out in the Reform Laws handed down by Benito Juárez.

Now, he has succeeded in installing military chapels inside military units. But it goes beyond that: The establishment of temples inside Army and Navy installations.

And not just that. He intends to participate actively in poltics, priests and other clergy running for elected office.

For some years now, the Catholic church has also been able to count on coverage in the news media, which every Sunday broadcast from the Metropolitan Cathedral, not only the archbishop’s sermon but also his policy positions and opinions on crucial social issues.

Opina de todo. Hace política. Toma partido.

“The Church Militant and the Church Triumphant.” From a Yale commentary on Dante’s Paradiso. Curatorial brain fart omits attribution?
He has an opinion on everthing. He takes sides. He lobbies the federal government on issues like banning abortion or support for anti-narcotraffic operations. And he criticizes those who question the government.

The cardinal, who last Thursday celebrated the 22nd anniversary of his ordination, is a politician and intervenes as such in the life of the nation; but he disqualifies the press when it discovers what goes on in his jurisdiction, especially when it is of a criminal nature.

On Christmas Eve, when Catholicism celebrates the birth of Jesus, Rivera lit into the reporters who had investigated his alleged involvement in the cover-up of Father Aguilar, accused of pederasty both in Mexico and the United States.

On December 18, in a Christma homily at a convent in Mexico City, he said: “In all this, you find these people here, and also people abroad, who murder reputations, dignity. The good name of persons, they are truly prostitutes, true prostitutes of mass commmunication who undermine the good name of others!”

The Bible is full of references to prostitution. Not only the well-known episode of Mary Magdalene, but also the idea that the descendents of Israel used this term to refer to idolaters, the worshippers of other gods.

Revelations ends with the story of the Whore of Babylon, who rode upon a beast (Rome) with seven head and ten horns — an allusion to the seven hills of the city and its ten emperors.

One of the things I find most striking is the strong participation by Catholic charities, as “faith-based” partners, in “democracy promotion” projects co-sponsored by the United States government — especially in the area of “promoting media freedom” and the like.

Remember those “structured securities for press freedom” issued in Switzerland a year or so back? I need to review, update and organize my notes on this subject.

In the meantime, a reading from the Gospel According to Zebu Cavaco:

Herod got a little paranoid now
Feared a revolution
Figured he’d better kill the sacred cow
Decreed a final solution

“Hey, Joe, where you gonna run to now?”
“Jesus, buddy, I don’t know man!”
“Well, here’s a tip that I give you, pal:
Stay out of Mexico, man.”

“The Pharaoh there is seven times as square
He rules by a holy sacred vision
He say’s only doing the Work of God
But he don’t want competition ….”

The word of the Cur-Deus Homos. (Thanks be to the cavaco.)

Peace on earth. Good will toward men.

The organization claimed it was a “quasi-Federal” faith-based initative, citing what it claimed was official endorsement of its ministry to soldiers.
