A source told O Globo that the bingo belongs to a group of militiamen (firemen, police, and ex-police who charge protection fees of residents and business owners) in the area, and that a police precinct captain runs the business.

The militia that operates in the Cordovil and Vista Alegre area in the Northern Zone has just opened its latest business enterprise: a bingo (gambling hall) installed in a large hall with more than 50 round wooden tables covered with white tablecloths. The grand opening, with pomp and circumstance, took place last Thursday and there were no parking problems: There is an exclusive garage for customers next door. The bingo was installed in the building of the former Rio Supermarket on Cordovil Street, across from the old printing plant of Bloch Editores, in Vista Alegre.

It also reports that an Army captain has been accused of leading the militia in Rio das Pedras (Western Zone). On which more in a bit.

Painted yellow and brown, the exterior of the builing displays a billiard ball with the number 7 in the middle, with seven stars above it. Below, the name: Vista Alegre [Fun Center]. The entrance, monitored by an extensive security scheme, has a glass door covered with a dark film that prevents the interior from being seen. A bingo card, an employee said, costs one real.

A source told O Globo that the bingo belongs to a group of militiamen (firemen, police, and ex-police who charge protection fees of residents and business owners) in the area, and that a police precinct captain runs the business.

What source? One can completely understand why the source might want anonymity in such a case, but still. Was this corroborated before running? How?

State judiciary police agents told O Globo that police already know of the bingo’s existence. They say that “nickel-hunter” machines, as well as traditional bingo games, are operating at the locations. Ferraz, head of the organized crime unit, stated that bingo is prohibited under Article 50 of the Law of Criminal Misdemeanors.

Good, clean fun, right?

Former Secretary of Education William Bennett is all for it.

Builds character.

Charred remains that may have once been an O Globo source for a story on militias was found in Cordovil. Has the DNA come back yet?
