Col. Rodrigues gets shot down like a dog.
Polícia prende três PMs suspeitos de assassinar coronel: The Estado de S. Paulo devotes its top Web story to developments in the assassination of the top military police commander in the northern zone of the city.
As it should. It would be nice if it dedicated the top of the print edition to the story as well. Instead of leading with a hoisted camel.
Primary emphasis on “oddly enough” infotainment: What do angry airborne camels have to do with the price of arroz, feijão and aipim?
I cannot tell you how demoralizing it is to live in an urban environment full of fear, uncertainty and doubt about which cops are really cops and which cops are really criminals. Not to even mention the criminals who dress up like cops — getting their cop uniforms from cops.

To put things into perspective, a suspected tenth death from yellow fever is getting a lot of ink and airtime at the moment.
Three more and the Globo network will have enough material for an hour-long documentary called “The Baker’s Dozen of Random Death.” Cue spooky theremin music. Pad generously with stock footage of monkeys.
At least three times that many cases of vaccine overdose have been reported.
But I still do not know the name of a single person shot at the Bad Boy bar last week — where the shooters reportedly emptied their pistols, walked outside, reloaded, walked back in, and pumped some more lead poisoning into the massively overkilled smoking cadavers.
Two military police (PM) sergeants and a private were arrested on Friday on suspicion of having taken part in the killing of Col. José Hermínio Rodrigues, patrol commander of the 3rd Metropolitan Area (CPA-M3). He was assassinated on January 16 while riding his bicycle along Caetano Álvares Ave. in the northern zone. The colonel was in charge of investigations into police involvement in “massacres” in the region. The three PMs were arrested by the homicide bureau (DHPP) in the course of investigations into the crime.
An order for the temporary detention of the three was issued by [a São Paulo court] as part of two investigations opened in 2007: One in a case of attempted homicide of a drug suspect and the other in the murder of this suspect’s mother. For now, police are being cautious about accusing the three directly of the murder of the the colonel.
In one of the cases under investigation, the shooter was driving a black Honda Falcon motorcycle, the same model and color used by the criminal who shot the colonel at least five times with a .380 pistol. The same type of weapon was also used in the two case in which the policemen were arrested.
We are not yet able to tie these cases with the colonel’s death, but this will be investigated,” said homicide supervisors Carneiro Lima. The three PMs will be detained for at least 30 days, a period that can be renewed for another 30 days in order to investigations to continue.
The Homicide Bureau did not disclose the names of the men arrested, what battalion they are assigned to or the contents of their statements about the colonel’s death and the other two crimes.
Besides their supposed tie to the colonel’s death, the DHPP is looking into their involvement in the “massacre” that left seven dead and two injured in the northern zone of the city on the day following the colonel’s death. The department has identified police participation in three of the seven cases of “massacres” in the region in 2007.

The periphery of the northern zone of the city lead the capital city in “massacres” in 2007. Of the 11 recorded prior to September of 2007, eight occurred in the area, leaving 26 dead. Only two cases were solved, both of them involving PMs. Two are in jail awaiting trial. In other parts of the city, the death toll was 11.
Two of the eight. Four of the seven.
I am still finding this confusing.
How about doing up a graphic timeline? Oh, wait, the Estadão has done one, using Flash 9.
It does not display properly in my default browser, so I open in up in Opera instead.
The methods used by the assassins was also the same. Men in dark helmets drove up on motorcycles and used .40 pistols, a standard-issue police method.
I am almost absolutely sure I read about a Zona Norte death-squad incident in which the shooters drove up in a four-door sedan.
And in the infographic, the use of 7.62mm and .380 (9mm) pistols is also mentioned in some of the incidents. Must I really go back carefully fact-check the entire story in detail? Is this what I pay R$2.50 a day for when I go to buy a newspaper?
The .40 round measures 10.16mm, I google up.
Every military policeman I saw yesterday on our jaunt on the CPTM from Moema to the Centro (free transfer to the Red Line at Barra Fund) was armed with a .38 revolver. An enormous freaking .38 revolver.

In January 2007, four persons were killed in Jardim Brasil and a PM private was arrested by police. In May, 7 young men were killed in Jaraguá. A PM corporal involved in that crime was arrested.
The homicide bureau has indications that military policemen were involved in other cases under investigation.
One of them involves suspicions about members of the Tactical Force of the 18th Battalion and members of ROTA. The crime occurred in February 2007 in Jardim Elisa Maria. Four men drove up in a (Fiat) Palio, dominated seven young men, ordered them to turn their backs, and fired. Only one survived.
Okay, that was the incident I was remembering. So much for the theory that the method used was always the same, right? Or am I missing something?
