The Spanish daily El Economista reported that the son-in-law of Carlos Slim, Daniel Hajj, has made contact in Barcelona with the Swedish-Finnish company TeliaSonera, which controls a 76.5% stake in Yoigo, to initiate takes on a possible acquisition of the minor telecoms operator in Spain.

Madrid — América Movil, the mobile telephony concern of Mexican multibillionaire Carlos Slim, wants to enter the Spanish market and negotiate an acquisition of Yoigo, the Spanish El Economista reported today.

The Iberian daily, citing sources close to the Mexican group, says the son-in-law of Carlos Slim, Daniel Hajj, made contact on Monday in Barcelona, where an international conference on mobile telephony is being held, with the Swedish-Finnish TeliaSonera, which controls 76.5% of Yoigo, a very minor cellular operator in Spain.

Yoigo chief counsel Johan Andsjo told El Economista ([of Spain?] that TeliaSonera has no intention of selling.

América Móvil and the fixed-telephony company Telmex are the pillars of the empire controlled by Slim, who surpassed Bill Gates of Microsoft in 2007 as the richest man in the world, according to Fortune magazine.

I  think a small Mexican business news service founded by an ex-Bloomberger actually deserves credit for that minor scoop.
