Yellow alert: Vila Mariana bus burning, clampdown in Cracolânda.

PMs são flagrados ao agredir pessoas durante blitz no centro de SP: residual fallout from last night’s “yellow alert” and bus burning incident.

As I have said before, there are moments when an ostensive police presence and ostentatious policing are hard to tell apart in this crazy town; compare And Speaking of Anti-Crime Crusades.

Military police were caught on video assaulting persons being stopped and searched during a “blitz” in the Crackland area of downtown São Paulo. The area is known as gathering place for drug users.

And rightly so. But we also have friends living in the region who are bank loan officers and e-commerce nerds who wear Ashleigh Banfield-style deconstructionist eyeglasses.

And then again, I have seen junkies shooting up on the Av. Paulista at high noon, just a few paces from some ostentatious PM cavalry officers. So go figure.

In the video images, which were broadcast today on the Rede Globo, a policeman is seen kicking two men, and then later assaulting another with a kick and a punch. Another young man being searched is assaulted with various blows on the back.

At least three PMs took part in the stop and search. After the assaults, the PMs burned the bags and bagpacks of the group.

There has been no confirmation as to whether the men who were stopped were carrying drugs or suspected of crimes. Folha Online contacted the press office of the military police for commented, but has yet to receive a response.

So what else is new? The FO will run just about anything to do with whiz-bang technology, Orkut or YouTube.

Folha Online is a separate newsroom, apparently, from the reportagem local — whom I much prefer.

A friend of ours lives down there, and has been kicking around the idea of starting up a street paper called A Corneta de Cracolândia — the Crackland Bugle.

Start your stop-watches and start counting how long that takes to end up, or not, on YouTube.
